Turning My First House Into a Home: My DIY Dream

posted on 7 February 2012

I recently purchased a little house in a busy suburb near the beach. It's a bit of a fixer upper but I know that it can be my dream home with the right amount of money time and motivation! I'll need to buy in both plumbing supplies and other materials to achieve this dream. To help it on its way to being perfect the first thing I need to do is every DIY'ers dream, knock down a couple of walls. The house was built in an era before open plan living and so all the rooms seem a little closed in, if I could knock down a couple of walls and merge the kitchen, dining and lounge areas it would be like living in a palace, admittedly a small palace but a palace none the less! Once down a lick of paint, maybe an off white or modern light grey would make it look like the rooms had always been one. Then, since money and time are of no issue I'd redo the floors, strip back the carpet and discover wonderful floorboards underneath. A little sanding and a coat of stain or varnish and my little house would be well on the way to becoming my dream home. Once that has been finished I'd attack the garden but that's another story altogether.

Working hard is important for one to earn a living.

posted on 10 January 2012

We are living in very difficult times such that if you are not working really hard in life then you may not be able to earn a decent living for yourself. There are only a few people who can manage their needs as well as their wants. These are the people who work so hard in life such that they barely have time for themselves. If you want to manage most of your wants as well, you have to improve the way that you work and add a few hours to your working time. roofing contractors for instance have to extend their working hours a bit because most of them only work when the weather conditions are favorable. There are times that you have to withstand the harsh conditions in order to earn a little more and these are the times that I am talking about. You can earn as much as you want in this life only if you put your mind to it and you work more than you have ever done before.

Getting Storm Windows for Your Home

posted on 27 December 2011

With these days being too unpredictable than the former years, you need to make sure that your home is equipped with the right tools that can help you. You should look at the current foundations that you have and among those that you would need to consider getting are storm windows. These items are built for the strongest occasion you can ever encounter. If you have no idea what these are yet, storm windows can be seen in your nearby hardware store. But if you want a more detailed account about it, you can simply research about it online. You can also download some details as to how they can easily be attached so in case you would need to have one installed right in your home, that would be easily done. You can also try to buy these windows online. You can even get the approvals of some online forum first for possible leads. You can also try to go through review websites to see what they have to suggest.

Clean Energy Is A Natural Option For Our Future

posted on 26 December 2011

Whether one agrees with the arguments for or aginst man-made global warming, where green energy is incorporated in the discussion, it can only be in our best interests to examine alternatives to existing sources of energy. Yes, oil or coal can be dirty but are readily available. They are also a finite resource. Alternatives require research but promise a release from geopolitical considerations. Often, oil is best located in regions where we would rather it wasn't. The fact that alternatives are cleaner is a bonus. Not to mention the predicted savings for the end user. Whilst we live on this planet there will always be wind, sunshine (via solar panels) and waves ready to provide us with clean, renewable energy. Once installed, energy plants require maintenance only. The source of the energy will be delivered freely at the point of capture. Whether major industrial sized plant or individual home energy system, the end results will mean cheaper, cleaner energy with less damage caused to the environment.

Nothing Drives Me More Crazy Than Crazy Ants In My Home

posted on 9 December 2011

"Crazy Ants" are more of a nuisance than a real threat, in that, they've no ability to sting or bite. I wish they were as easy to deal with as flies are - fly killer sprays deal with them very quickly. They just move really quickly in large numbers especially when there's a food source nearby. Sadly, such food sources can be your meals of groceries at home... I had searched the Internet and had found many 'remedies' to curb the nest growth and deter them from entering my home but I found none to be as effective as the simple yet venerable bug spray. With a few well aimed sprays one could both deter more ants from entering and also immobilize those that were already too close for comfort. It just so happened though, that I became to excited and tried something that I probably shouldn’t have. I had the bug spray in one hand and a lighter in the other, and for a moment it was as if I was th enemy of the ants who also bore a flamethrower. It was epic, it was fun but when the wind changed direction, my eyebrows were completely burnt off, and that not a price I’m willing to pay when the regular way of spraying works...

DIY: the Best Man Cave Ever Built

posted on 3 December 2011

I would love to build a total sports watching paradise in my basement. The centerpiece would be a huge – somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 inches – 3D TV. On either side of that would be two more slightly smaller (perhaps 50 inches) TVs. A seven-speaker surround sound system would be an absolute must, of course. To control all of the TVs and satellite receivers, I would get one of the giant universal remotes with a touch screen and programmable functions that automatically turn on all of the devices and put them on the correct settings for watching the main TV, and has the option to change the sound to one of the other TVs when that’s what you want to do. The flooring would be made of polished hardwoods. On the wall opposite the TVs, I would build a bar area complete with a refrigerator, a microwave, and storage for liquors, mixers and glasses of all kinds. I would also have the biggest, plushest sectional sofa ever made. It would have to have built-in drink holders. I would also insist of the sofa having sections that recline and massage function would be nice.

My Experience With Pest Control, or How I Spent a Hundred Bucks and Still Had Fleas in the House

posted on 11 November 2011

The time: summer 2007. The place: my house. The problem: millions of fleas. The solution: call a pest control company. I'd dealt with flies before easily with the implementation of fly screens. Fleas? Not so easy. Where the fleas came from I have no idea. We had a cat and a dog that both lived in the house, both clean and flealess. But suddenly we were overrun with the darn things. The carpet seemed full of fleas, morning, noon and night. As soon as I put my feet on the floor they started chewing on my ankles. As I sat at my computer, they chewed on my ankles. The fleas were out to get me, but I was ready to fight back. I sprayed, I bombed, I sprinkled, but to no avail. Finally, I called in the heavy hitter - a professional pest control man. He came to the house, looked around, said, "No problemo!" and got to work. He sprayed his magic spray along the baseboards throughout the entire house. He sprayed in the crawl space under the house. He sprayed around the outside of the house. Then he got in his truck and drove away with my personal check. The fleas never so much as sneezed. I called the pest control pro back. He repeated his magical spraying ritual, then drove away, no check this time. The fleas sneezed a time or too, then got after my ankles again with renewed gusto. Exasperated, I called for a meeting with the head flea. We quickly worked out a deal. If I would leave them alone, they would move out after two more weeks. So I did, and they did. The fleas were gone at last, but so was my faith in modern chemical pest control. Never again will I waste a personal check on such unmagical magic.

How I Absolutely Need to Make Changes My House

posted on 17 October 2011

Where do I start? There are so many things that I want to do to my house inside and out - from getting new balustrades on my top landing to a new carpet in the living room to pick two random jobs. I will pick the project that will mean the most to me and help me out the most. There is a spare room in my house that is being used as storage of all the "junk". This room is supposed to be my office. Right now this room is a hideous color of pink. It is so bright that you can see it from the street at night when the light is on. I want to paint this room a soft white. It needs some pretty curtains and the carpet needs to be cleaned. I need to put up a desk and some shelves and move my printer and computer into this room. I will set up a small table that way I can work on my scrap book whenever I want, and I wont have to put all my supplies away when I am done. This room will be my hideaway from the stresses of everyday life. I am looking forward to the day that I can say that I have completed my project, and I finally ahve my office space.

Spiders: Don't Think You Can Do It Yourself

posted on 14 October 2011

When I first moved into my house, I knew I was going to need pest control. I had deal with bed bugs in the past, and I'd dealt with that matter using bed bug powders. However, my new house had a new problem: spiders. Spiders, I hate spiders….my friend also bought a new house and they had spiders every where, and I wasn’t having any of that. I figured that I could handle it myself with the store bought kind and simply put all the pest control companies’ cards on my desk. One afternoon, I was cleaning the front bathroom. I swept the new pretty floors and picked up all the mats in preparation for mopping. As I mopped under the counter, I noticed a big piece of fuzz that I missed and bent down to pick it up. It has LEGS! SPIDER!! It was huge! I grabbed a Raid can and unloaded on it. Although one spray would have been enough, I sprayed until his legs curled up. I put the can down went to my desk and called Terminix on the spot. They came the next day and I don’t have to worry about spider fuzz anymore.

Bare Walls Are Like a Blank Canvas

posted on 1 October 2011

My friend recently undertook a self build project, and it's made me re-evaluate my own property. Growing up, I never had anything on my bedroom walls. No posters, paintings, postcards, photos of friends and family, nothing. It was something my parents discouraged, mostly because the blue tack or cellophane tape would stick to the white walls and eventually discolour it and leave it riddled with unsightly faded sticky yellow spots. That habit seems to have carried over into my student life, and my dorm rooms, unlike most of my peers, were devoid of any personality. That's what I'd like to change, now that I'm living on my own in an apartment: to cover my walls with beautiful things. But because I'm choosy and particular about art and things, I would have properly framed prints by contemporary artists like Audrey Kawasaki and James Jean. It goes without saying that I would need a huge budget to accommodate even a modest-sized print by one of them for my walls. But if I had the cash, my walls would be incredibly beautiful.

Bee Spray Versus Pest Control: Who wins?

posted on 16 September 2011

Bees and I have never been friends. Flies? No problem - chain screens and other barriers keep them out. Bees just seem to be more devious thought. I always keep wasp and hornet spray in stock in case I see a random flyer, but this summer I ran into another problem. Coming home from work one day, I noticed a large, black bee hovering in front of the window by the porch. As I tried to enter my front door, the bee buzzed around my head in displeasure. I waited until it was dark and the bee retreated, and I sprayed the area with the wasp and hornet spray. I did this every day for about a week and I could never seem to get rid of them. More were present, and it was really starting to get on my nerves. A pest control company was coming to my house to treat for termites, and I asked them to help with the large black bees that would not go away. I do not know what he used near the affected area, but the bees never came back.

A Son's Promise to His Beloved Mother

posted on 29 August 2011

When I was still a young boy, I saw how hard my mom would work every single day, just so she could provide for me and my brothers. We lost dad when we were still very young and mom had no choice but to take the roles of both mom and dad to all her three children. It was not easy all the time, especially because we were all boys. Mom always had to go the extra mile in order to understand each of our needs. A few times, I saw mom cry in a corner, trying her best not to let us hear or see her. Being the eldest, I felt like I had to do something to make her feel better. But I was too young and I was usually lost for words to tell my mom. But I remember how I used to tell her, Mom, when I'm grown up, I promise to build a beautiful home for you. As you wish, I'll keep it simple but it will have heritage roofing as you also wish. Today, that promise is fulfilled and mom cries once again...but this time, they're tears of joy.

Don’t ignore faulty Electrical wiring

posted on 20 August 2011

Have you recently installed new lights at home and yet find them flickering regularly? If that is the case, you should call emergency electrician services to come and inspect the matter. The reason we ask you to do so is because even wires have a lifespan and they need to be replaced and upgraded as well. don’t let your space be victims to faulty Electrical wiring or you may not have a space to live and work in ahead. Electrical wiring should only be done with the helping hands of emergency electrical experts. They know the codes and the rules well enough. This means they have immense experience in keeping homes and offices around well lit and safe all the year round, so call only for emergency electricians to change the faulty wiring. Electrical wiring can damage your electrical machines, instruments and anything else that runs on electricity. This would end up in damages and more money expenses as well, save all that when the emergency electricians fix that faulty Electrical wiring.

If you want to emphasize your kitchen islands and also concentrate the light on these areas, putting pendant kitchen lights would be the best choice. There are different types of pendant lights modern – contemporary, Mediterranean, crystal and tiffany. If you have a house with a modern contemporary interior, it would be best to place a modern – contemporary pendant light. It exudes a modern twist thru its angular shape and straight lines. These lights also come in bold colors but are in the minimalistic approach. If you want to have a lighter shade in your kitchen, you may use the Mediterranean lights which are usually made in iron and natural stones. Check these 2 tips before calling Manhattan movers

posted on 2 August 2011

Before you call for the service of Manhattan Movers, please ensure you have read and understood these two important tips. First we would like you to visit as many movers online and gather free quotes for the same. This will allow you to compare and by not doing this you would end up spending more than you thought you would pay, say Manhattan movers. Time has to be taken to plan the move and to compare the free estimates given. If you really want the right movers to help you, you should then do your homework and see which estimates suit your needs the most. The second tip would be to check with the moving costs, which would be same for most companies, but not really same when you read why they are charging you what they want you to pay. When you make comparisons, you would know exactly why you are being charged and what you are being charged for, say Manhattan movers, so be wise.

Grandpas way of clearing a clogged sink

posted on 21 June 2011

Here is a small secret which can be done at home and has come down over generations, this would surely help you keep the clogged sink issue at bay. 1. Make sure you pour nothing heavy into the sink, no sediments, left over food particles or even grease. All of this leads to a clogged sink scenario, since over time it can accumulate and be a blockage or an obstacle for smooth flow. 2. A clogged sink should be treated with a mix of vinegar, baking soda and hot water. Once you mix the three well, flush it down the clogged sink and wait for a while before pouring cold water down the sink. 3. Finally, if the clogged sink has happened due to overgrown tree roots or heavy metal objects. Treat this as a learning sign, on keeping your flora and fauna away from the drain pipes and NOT being careless while emptying the dirty utensils into the sink for a wash.
